How do you run a paper tower team challenge?
Give every team the same paper and tape, define one build area, and set a shared timer. The goal is to make the tallest tower that stands without hands, wall support or floor tape for 10 seconds. When time ends, teams step back. The host tests stability, measures vertically from the floor to the highest paper point, and records the height to the nearest centimetre. Equal recorded heights are a tie.

What materials does each team receive?
Prepare one identical kit per team:
- 10 sheets of A4 or US Letter printer paper;
- one 100-centimetre strip of masking tape, loosely wound around a card;
- one pencil;
- one ruler; and
- one pair of age-appropriate scissors.
The host also needs a visible 15-minute timer, a metric tape measure or metre stick, a score sheet and low-tack tape to mark the build zones. Build-zone tape is placed by the host before play and is not part of a team's construction kit.
Only the 10 paper sheets and supplied masking tape may become part of the tower. The pencil, ruler, scissors, tape card, table, floor, wall and people are tools or surroundings, not structural materials. A torn or cut piece still came from one of the 10 sheets; there is no material bonus for using scraps.
How should the space and teams be set up?
Use teams of three or four. Mark one square build zone on the floor for each team, leaving a clear walking route and enough distance that a falling tower cannot reach another group. The host sets a maximum eligible height of 120 centimetres above the floor and marks that level on a nearby wall or freestanding measure before play. The tower must stay inside its zone.
Teams may sit or kneel at the edge of the zone, or use an accessible-height table if every team receives the same setup. Do not mix floor and table heights in one scored round. Nobody stands on a chair, table, box or other object, and nobody reaches above a comfortable standing height.
What are the closed build rules?
Read these rules aloud and leave them visible:
- Build only with the supplied 10 sheets of paper and 100 centimetres of masking tape.
- Fold, roll, bend, tear or cut the paper. Cut or tear the tape.
- Keep the complete structure inside the marked build zone.
- Do not tape the tower to the floor, wall, furniture or any object outside the kit.
- Do not lean the tower against anything or support it with a person.
- Do not add a load, decoration or tool to the tower.
- Keep every part at or below the 120-centimetre height limit.
- Stop building when the host calls time and step outside the zone.
- To qualify, the tower must remain freestanding for 10 seconds.
Teams may test and rebuild during the 15 minutes. A collapse before time is not a penalty. Material discarded inside the zone still belongs to that team and cannot be replaced.
What happens at the start and stop?
Give teams two minutes to read the rules and discuss without opening their kits. Then place the kits in the zones, start the 15-minute timer and say “Build.” Announce five minutes remaining, two minutes remaining and 30 seconds remaining.
When the timer reaches zero, say “Stop and step back.” Everyone puts tools on the floor outside the zone, releases the tower and moves behind the marked waiting line. A team touching or changing its tower after the stop call receives no measurement until all other towers have been tested; it may then take one unscored demonstration measurement.
Do not extend the timer for a late start unless every team receives the same reset. If a safety pause affects one zone, stop the shared clock, clear the issue and restart all teams together.
How is a tower tested for freestanding stability?
The host tests one zone at a time. All participants remain outside that zone.
- Confirm that nothing touches the tower except the floor.
- Confirm that no part exceeds the 120-centimetre limit.
- Start a 10-second count without touching or blowing on the structure.
- If the tower remains standing through “10,” mark it qualified.
- If any part other than loose scrap touches the floor outside the base or the tower falls, mark it not qualified.
A leaning tower may qualify if it stays inside the zone, remains below the limit and has no external support. A detached scrap does not add height and can be ignored. A tower that touches the zone tape may qualify; a tower taped to it may not.
There is no repair after the build timer. A non-qualifying tower still joins the debrief and may be photographed with team consent after the scored round.
How is height measured?
Measure only qualified towers. Place a metre stick or extended tape measure vertically beside the tower without touching it. Read from the floor directly below the structure to its highest attached paper point. Record the height in centimetres, rounded to the nearest whole centimetre.
The host performs every measurement from floor level. Team members do not hold the ruler, tower or tape. If the tower collapses because the host touches it, allow the team to restore it to its stop-time form, repeat the 10-second test and measure again. If it falls without contact, it no longer qualifies.
What is the scoring and tie rule?
The tallest qualified tower wins the height round. A tower that fails the 10-second test has no scored height. Do not subtract points for unused paper or award style points after building; adding hidden criteria after the timer is unfair.
Two or more towers with the same recorded whole-centimetre height share the place. Do not run a speed tiebreaker, add a load or ask teams to reach higher. If the group wants one further result, run a fresh round with new kits and the same rules; the earlier tie remains recorded.
How should rule disputes be decided?
The written boundary controls the ruling:
- Tape touches the floor: allowed only if it is attached to paper, not stuck to the floor or zone tape.
- A paper strand leaves the zone: the tower fails the boundary check, even if its base remains inside.
- A tool is trapped in the tower: remove it before the test; if the structure then falls, it does not qualify.
- A teammate holds the base at zero: the host restarts the 10-second count only after hands are clear.
- The top sways above 120 centimetres: it fails the height-limit check and is not measured.
- A tower breaks during measurement: use the contact rule in the measurement section.
The host does not invent a penalty. A tower either passes every qualification check or it does not.
What makes the debrief cooperative?
After scoring, ask each team to point out one choice that helped and one change they would test next. Useful questions include:
- Which shape resisted bending best?
- Where did the structure begin to lean?
- How did the team choose between ideas?
- What job or handoff worked well?
- What would you prototype first in another round?
Science Buddies explains that folding or rolling paper changes how it resists bending and frames rebuilding as iteration. Use those questions to discuss evidence, not to lecture a team whose tower fell.
Every team may keep or recycle its own tower after the host closes the scored area. A collapse is a test result, not a verdict on the group.
What safety boundaries apply?
The host controls the scissors and measurement area. Use age-appropriate scissors on the floor or table, cut away from hands and faces, and close or place them flat when not in use. Route younger participants' cutting to a supervising adult. Do not run with tools or hold a paper tube near someone's eyes.
Keep faces and bodies outside the build zone during stability testing. Towers may collapse without warning. Nobody catches a falling tower; the zone remains clear until it has settled. Paper and masking tape are the only falling materials in this version—do not add cans, books, glass, coins or other loads.
Do not climb, stand on furniture, stretch above a comfortable reach or lift a child to build or measure. The 120-centimetre limit exists so the entire challenge can be completed and judged from floor level. Use a table-height version for participants who need it and apply that setup to every scored team.
Collect tape cores, loose tape, pencil toppers and broken tool pieces promptly. These are small parts and must be kept away from young children and pets. Clear scraps from walking routes after each round. Participation is voluntary; a player may choose a planning, timing or recording role instead of cutting or building.
